The views of Catskills and the property, are beautiful, even in the darkest days of winter. It sits on 25 gorgeous acres of a former apple farm. <image:caption>Atrium Bowerbird’s most ambitious project to date is our reconceptualization of Brooklyn townhouse living. We gutted an existing, 2-story home, opened up the rear brick walls and left them in a state of “arrested decay.” Then we built a 3-story rear addition, in so doing, creating an atrium within, with skylights 30 feet above the dining room floor Photography by Matthew Williams Interior Design collaboration with Liddell Studio</image:caption>

A 2-story extension was added to the rear, with an internal, open stair, for the lower duplex, to let as much light in as possible. The rear of the lower duplex, garden level ceiling, was raised to 10 feet, and continues as such through the addition, opening on a 2-level garden. Photography by Matthew Williams</image:caption>

With a lot of care, and close coordination and input from our client, we renovated this dilapidated old house into an upper triplex with garden apartment. The original stained glass at the entry could have been a Tiffany, which we had to restore, along with copious plaster moldings, woodwork, and medallions. The kitchen is minimalist, simple, and white, so as not to compete with the original detailing. Photography by Matthew Williams</image:caption>

The driveway wraps around to a carport, buried partly in the hill that leads to the roof. Below, an entry area divides the house into sleeping and living wings, creating a canyon between them, filled with reclaimed boulders found from demolition. Rather than perfunctorily dispensing with the stormwater, runoff from the roofs spills down into the slot canyon and continues down the slope of the hill, carving out a stream over the years. <image:caption>Cut Outs This complete reconstruction, plus rear and rooftop additions, to a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, townhouse came about because the original, 2-story townhouse was collapsing. It offered the opportunity to re-think what it could be, so we rebuilt it with 10 foot floor heights, and in a nod to what came before we rebuilt in brick, reused the original cornice, set back the top floor to create a balcony, and folded the front entry wall inwards to turn the door perpendicular to the street, so as to offer privacy from within for a home in the heart of Williamsburg. Meant to be barely visible from the road, it appears modest in scale, and reveals itself as one approaches. The house is split into a sleeping wing and a living wing by a low-roofed entry. The bluestone path continues into the entry floor, and the exterior siding continues in along the walls and ceiling. Upon entering, the view West opens up to a pastoral vista.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Arches This double-duplex brownstone, in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, was a complete gut renovation, relocating spectacular, 10ft arched doors on the 12 foot tall, Parlor floor. We created a solid oak, lower duplex stair, a bench along the bay window, lime washed brick walls, redesigned the fireplace, and installed two teak kitchens with stone waterfalls. For the bulkhead stair, we custom-built a perforated metal stair to allow the maximum amount of light through to the apartment below. Photography by Matthew Williams</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slot Canyon This project is in Kent, Connecticut, is composed of sandy-colored concrete blocks and knotty pine. From the road, a square, abstract tower appears in the trees, but the rest is obscured by a a hilltop. The driveway wraps around to a carport, buried partly into the hill. Then, a stair cuts up the hill to a path leading one on top of the roof, and an entry stair cuts the house into a sleeping wing and living wing, creating a veritable slot canyon out of the concrete block, within which we will backfill with the local shale, granite and quartz boulders found on the site. <image:caption>Double Dormer This Fort Greene townhouse is almost at the point of collapse. We will keep the facade, but demolish most of the interior, adding a story and a full-height rear addition, going deep into the ground. A glass rear wall will brighten up the future double-duplex, and bright light deeper into the house. Expected completion date, 2024</image:caption>
